Term 1 Week 3 Va! Va! Va! Voom! with Vector!

Vector visited Ruapotaka School this week
and we were pretty impressed with what
electricity can do!

We learned that the high wires of power lines carry 11,000 volts of electricity! Kaboom, if you touch them! We learned that a transformer changes the 11,000 volts to a safer amount that goes into our homes, whew, much better for keeping our whanau safe!

Estor told us all about the insulator that protects the wires from each other, (as well as all the other information).

It was really impressive watching the robot blow up!

Thank you for helping us understand about being safe with electricity Zot!

Some people got to demonstrate the safety clothing and equipment that the Vector technicians wear when they fix power lines. These included a heavy jacket, thick rubber gloves, cloth gloves, helmet and safety glasses.

Thank you Christina and Ocean, you look great demonstrating the helmet and safety glasses!

Aotearoa, Our Special Place - North Island - Term 1 Week 4

Kia ora Whanau!
Room 9 has been learning about the special places in Aotearoa that are part of the North Island.
Here are some we have learned about this week.

How many of these places can you locate on our map of the North Island?
Good luck Whanau!

                                  Kia ora Whanau!

For this term our Inquiry is:
'Aotearoa-a special place to be'.
As part of this inquiry we have been studying the art works of New Zealand artist Nigel Brown. He uses many icons to represent what is special to him about Aotearoa. Some of these include: kereru, (woodpigeon), ponga trees, mountains, the ocean, his family, rugby ball, and silver fern.
We have created our own self-portraits using his method of doing a strong border with icons and a head and shoulders portrait in the centre with places that are special to us in the background.

Here are our portraits!
